Alexander Calder - Elephant - wire and wood (1928)
The 6th grade class at Lincoln Middle School created animal sculptures. They used pieces of wire and wrapped them with plastic bags and yarn. This project was influenced by the wire sculptures of Alexander Calder (as seen above). The students first drew a sketch of what they wanted to sculpt, then they had to draw another sketch that included where they would need to support the body with wire. It was a challenge for most students to think about their drawing 3-dimensionally. Another challenge of this project was to use only cold connections.

Fibers and plastic, oh my! What a delightful way to create sculpture. These are amazing.
